70% choose the human: what my Voice rollout says about the Voice hype

Few promises are as loud right now as Voice AI: the bot on the phone that replaces the human. Our number from production tells a different story.

The number

On our Voice rollout we gave callers the choice right at the start: bot or human. Around 70% choose the human up front. (What that number means for the resolution rate is in the note on resolution rates; this piece is about something else.)

Why voice is different

On the phone, tolerance for bot friction drops. A «Sorry, I didn’t get that» weighs more spoken out loud than read in silence. Voice is a more intimate channel than chat, and someone who speaks often wants to be heard, not processed. This isn’t a rejection of AI. It shows when people prefer a human.

The freedom to choose is the real story

Those 70% exist only because we offer the choice. Hide the human and make the bot the only door, and the «adoption rate» suddenly looks great. It’s forced, not chosen. Anyone who wants to flatter their Voice numbers only has to take the alternative away.

That’s why the freedom to choose is right, even though it structurally depresses the bot rate: it delivers real acceptance data instead of wishful numbers. You learn what people want, not what they’ll put up with when there’s no other way.

Two clarifications

Two clarifications, so the number doesn’t claim more than it can. First: initially. Someone who picks the human the first time might take the bot the second, once it has proven useful. Trust grows. Second: context. In the regulated, often emotional setting where I measure, the threshold to the human sits differently than in fast-moving e-commerce. The direction holds; the exact level depends on the industry.

An adoption rate that exists because there was no alternative isn’t adoption, it’s a dead end with statistics attached. Anyone who wants to know whether their Voice bot is good puts the human next to it and watches who gets chosen.
